Singing "I am a Sprout!"
IMG_1171.JPG
 Music is a moral law.
It gives soul to the universe,
Wings to the mind,
Flight to the imagination,
A charm to sadness,
Gaity and life to everything!
It is the essence of order
And lends to all that is good and
Just and beautiful.
                                 Plato

To help kids learn each other's names it is "Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar." I think I might substitute sneaked for stole and

have children whisper it. Children sit in circle. Start with a patch, clap, snap rhythm. The point is to call the name of another child in the circle. Set the rhythmic tempo then add words. The choric speech goes like this:

First child says:               Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
Other children                 Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
First child says                Jean stole the cookie from the cookie jar!
  Jean says                        Who me?
  Everyone says                 Yes you!
  Jean says                        Couldn't be.
  Everyone:                       Then who?
Jean says                        John stole the cookie from the cookie jar
  John says                        Who me?
  Everyone says                 Yes you!
John says                        I stole the cookie from the cookie jar!  ( He holds up the cookie and walking behind the children(eyes closed) gives it to someone else - if you use a cookie)

I love music and science and try to include music in all of my programs. These are lyrics to some of my favorite songs and I adapt them to the age and ability of the kids. My favorite tape is "Put on Your Green Shoes" recorded by songwriters and artists for Earth(SAFE). You find it from Sony Kids Music. "Healthy Planet ,Healthy People" and everything that Tom Pease records for kids is great fun. Ex. Boogie, Boogie, Boogie." (tape) Someone's Gonna Use It After You" is on Tom Chapin's "This Pretty Planet". The Garden Song is from " A Child's Celebration of Song". Also check out Raffi's CD "Everything Grows". You may find these at the library.

                         We Love Trees

Chorus:     Trees       (kids echo)          Trees

 (4 times)    Trees                                  Trees

                             We Love Trees

We love chestnut, linden, apple, olive, and the aspen tree

Oak, elm, cedar, walnut and the hickory

There’s the cherry, redwood, cottonwood

And the dogwood tree

And what’s the biggest tree of all?

That’s the sequoia tree!

(Chorus)

There’s the birch, fir, coconut, and the mulberry,

We get that tasty syrup from the sugar maple tree.

There’s the eucalyptus, blue spruce, and the rubber tree,

And we love that ponderosa pine,

And our palmetto tree!

(Chorus)

Trees are good for animals and people, birds, and bugs.

Trees are good for other trees,

And plants and air and slugs.

Trees are like our brothers and our sisters to the end

So . . .plant a tree, hug a tree, make a new friend . . .

(Chorus)

         Put on Your Green Shoes

Gather round children and you will hear,

The sound of a cricket callin in your ear.

That's Mother Nature, she's cryin' out loud,

"This old world, it needs some lovin' now," so

(Chorus) Put on yyour green shoes, Put on your green shoes,

Mother Nature sh'e callin' to you

Just put on your green shoes.

Put on your green shoes and walk with me,

We'll go around back and plant a tree.

Help it grow and you will see

The way the world was meant to be.

(Chorus)

I wonder how the world would be,

Without the shade of the redwood tree,

Without all the fish, the birds and the bees,

Springtime would be lonely.

(chorus)

Mother Nature she's callin' to you to put on your green shoes

(Chorus)

Mother Nature she's countin' on you

To put on your green shoes

S

                   The Green Shoes Walk

      1. It’s a walk; it’s a certain kind of attitude!

Giving mother earth some gratitude,

For the lakes, the rivers, the trees, and the grass,

We’ve got to care about them if we want them all to last!

Pick it up, never throw it on the street,

Cause we’ve got our green shoes on our feet.

The water, the air, it’s important to us.

We’re gonna show the world that we’re serious!

Chorus:

We’re gonna walk that green shoes walk - don’t just talk about it,

Walk that walk . . . . Walk that walk!

     2. See the children in the park having so much fun

We’ve got to clean it up, save it for the little ones!

In the city, in the country, all around the world,

We’ve got to build a beautiful future

For all the boys and girls!

Every day we hear the stories and it’s making us nervous

We’ve got to give the planet more than just lip service!

What’s the use of crying bout the ozone layer?

We’ve got to heal it now, don’t wait till later.

Chorus:

Walk that green shoes walk don’t just talk about it,

Walk that walk. Come on now walk, walk, walk, walk . . . . . . . walk that walk!

3.  Grab your brother or your sister, don’t work alone

You can make a major difference starting here at home

Now’s the time to raise our voices.

Come on get on down and make some choices!

Recycle all your bottles and your soda cans

Don’t leave the water running when you wash your hands.

Get your friends together and plant some trees.

Bring your own bag for your groceries.

Don’t waste paper, turn down the heat.

And when it comes to driving everywhere, use your feet!

Check the package out before you pay the bill

Or most of what you buy will end up in a landfill!

Chorus:

Walk that green shoes walk; don’t just talk about it,

Walk that walk. ... Walk that walk.

4. The animals and flowers and humanity

Make up the leaves and branches of our family tree

Walk that walk, walk that walk

So put some love in everything you say and do!

It’s gonna make a circle and come back to you!

Walk that walk . . . walk that walk

Someone’s Gonna Use It after You

 1.  When you stand at the sink did you ever think

About the water going down the drain?

That it used to be in the deep blue sea

And before that it was rain!

Then it turned to snow for an Eskimo

To use in a snowball fight!

Then it traveled south till it reached your mouth

To help you brush your teeth tonight!

Chorus I: Someone’s gonna use it after you

So leave it as you’d like it when you’re through.

Cause the water, land, and air.

These are things we’ve got to share.

Someone’s gonna use it after you!

2. When you sneeze like thunder

Did you ever wonder if the air you set in motion,

Might have helped to form a tropical storm

Way out in the western ocean.

Could have been blown out of a blue whale’s spout

As it dove beneath the sea!

And now that air is in your care till you finish with your sneeze!

Chorus II: Someone needs to breathe it after you

3. Like a wheel the world is turning

Forest green and sky of blue

It will turn that way forever

As the old is born anew

Chorus

               Skeleton Jones

          1. Skeleton Jones rattling bones

Clickety clack all the way back home

You’ve got no skin to hold you in,

You’ve got bones where your arms had been

You look kind of funny but you sound real fine

              Clickety clackin keeping time

              Skeleton Jones rattling bones

2.        Skeleton Jones how do you do?

It’s nice to see what’s left of you

You’ve got no hands, you’ve got no eyes

Just a black top hat and a black bow tie

But you’ve got rhythm for heaven’s sake

Listen to the bones go shimmy and shake

Skeleton Jones rattling bones

3.        Skeleton Jones my old friend

I’d like to say that I knew you when

But the only time you can be seen

Is about midnight on Halloween

And then you’ll dance right out of here

But you’ll be back again next year.

Skeleton Jones rattling bones

             The Water Cycle

Water travels in a cycle . . . yes it does.(echo - yes it does)

Water travels in a cycle . . . yes it does.         yes it does

It goes up as evaporation

Forms big clouds as condensation,

And falls back down as precipitation . .yes it does  . yes it does!

The Stars are coming Out Like Popcorn

The stars are coming out like POP corn.

The stars are coming out of contro- o- o- ol.

The stars are coming out like popcorn

With O oh heaven as a bo- o- owl.

That Milky Way is looking so creamy.

That Milky Way is looking so sweet.

That Milky Way is looking so creamy.

It’s almost good enough for anyone to eat.

The stars are coming out like pop pop pop pop pop corn

They’re shooting from the north to the sou-ou-ou-outh.

The stars are coming out like pop- corn

So go outside and open

You’d better hop outside and open

You’d better fly outside and open

You’d better pop outside and open up your mmmmmm mouth mmmmmm mouth

Mmmmmm mouth   open up your mouth   oooooooooooooooooooooooooo

                       I’m the Earth

I’m the earth; I’m a great big round ball

I’m the earth; I’m the only one of my kind!

I’m the earth; I’m a great big hunk of rock.

I’m beautiful all the time

Striped zebra’s, long necked giraffes, hyena’s that love to laugh

I’m a wild wonderful world and I’m walking around the sun.

Chorus:

Walking, walking, walking          walking around the sun.

I’m a big beautiful world and I’m going around the sun.

4 ½ billion years old, 8,000 miles from pole to pole,

¾ H2O, and around and around I go!

67 thousand miles per hour,

It’s a wonder I can take a shower!

I’m a big wonderful world and I’m going around the sun.

Walking, walking, walking                 walking around the sun.

Any wonder that I’m having fun, I’m walking around the sun.

Walking, walking, walking           walking around the sun.

I’m a big beautiful world and I’m going around the sun.

         I Am a Sprout

Wet ground, warm sun

My life as a tree has just begun

I’m so sure I have no doubt

Cause my shell is cracked

And I have a sprout

I’m growing up and growing out

And growing up and growing out

Yippee hurray, I have a sprout

Yippee hurray I have a sprout

Yippee hurray I have a sprout!

                               My Roots Go Down

Chorus: My roots go down,              down into the earth

My roots go down,               down into the earth

My roots go down, down, down,       down into the earth.

1. I am a pine on a mountainside ( 3 times)

    My roots go down

2. I am a willow swaying in the breeze ( 3 times)

    My roots go down

3. I am a river flowing with life ( 3 times)

We are children all across the land ( 3 times)

Our roots go down

      Smokey the Bear
With a rangers hat and shovel - in a pair of dungarees
You will find him in the forest - always sniffing at the breeze.
People stop and pay attention when he tells them to beware,
Cause everybody knows that he’s the fire prevention bear!
Chorus:  Smokey the bear, Smokey the bear
Prowlin’ and a growlin’ and a sniffing the air
He can find a fire before it starts to flame
That’s why they call him Smokey
That was how he got his name
2. You can take a tip from Smokey
that there’s nothing like a tree
Cause they’re good for kid’s to climb in
    And they’re beautiful to see
You just have to look around you
    And you’ll find it’s not a joke
Just think what you’d be missing
If they all went up in smoke

                       The Garden Song
Chorus: Inch by inch, row by row, gonna help this garden grow.
Gonna mulch it deep below, gonna make it fertile ground.
Inch by inch, row by row, please bless these seeds I sow,
And warm them from below, till the rains come tumbling down.
Pulling weeds, picking stones, we are made of dreams and bones.
Feel the need to grow our own for the times are in our hands.
Rain for grain, sun and rain, we are part of nature's chain.
Tune your heart and tune your brain to the music of the land.
(Chorus )
Plant your rows straight and long. Temper them with prayer and song.
Mother Earth will make you strong if you give her love and care.
Day by day, seed to sprout, this is what life's all about,
From the inside pushing out, we keep growing everywhere.
(chorus)
Dirt to soil, seed to sprout, this is what life's all about,
From the garden reaching out with food for many to share.
(chorus )
          Dirt Made My Lunch
Chorus: Dirt made my lunch, dirt made my lunch.
Thank you dirt, thanks a bunch,
For my salad, my sandwich, my milk and my munch,
Cause dirt, you made my lunch!

Dirt is a word we often use when we talk about the earth beneath our shoes.
It's a place where plants can sink their toes and in a little while a garden grows.
chorus
A farmers plow will tickle the ground, you know the earth is left when the wheat is bound.
The grain is taken and the flour is ground for making a sandwich to munch on down.
Chorus
A jolly green beard grows upon the land. Out of the soil, the grass will stand,
But under the hoof it must bow, for making milk by way of a cow.
Chorus

          Six Plant Parts
Full chorus: Roots, stems, leaves, flowers fruits and seeds,
Roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds,
Roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds,
That's roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds.
Chorus after each verse: That's six parts, six parts, six plant parts that plants and people need.
The roots pull the plant into the ground. They gather up the water that falls around.
There's a root inside of me cause carrot is a root that I eat.
The stem is an elevator up from the ground. The water goes up and the sugar back down
And there's a stem inside of me cause celery is a stem that I eat.
Chorus: That's 6 parts, 6 parts, 6 plant parts that plants and people need.
The leaves are the kitchens where the food is done.
They breathe the air and catch the rays from the sun.
There's a leaf inside of me cause lettuce is a leaf that I eat.
Chorus: That's 6 parts. 6 parts, 6 plant parts that plants and people need.
The flowers are dressed so colorfully.
They hold the pollen and attract the bees
And there's a flower inside of me cause cauliflower is a flower that I eat.
Chorus
The fruit gets ripe and it falls on the ground.
It holds the seeds and it feeds the ground.
Theirs a fruit inside of me cause apple is a fruit that I eat.
Chorus
The seeds get buried in the earth. The cycle starts again with a new plant birth,
And there's a seed inside of me cause sunflower is a seed that I eat.
Chorus
Now you know what this whole world needs.
It's roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruit and seeds.
There's 6 plant parts inside of me cause a garden salad is what I eat.
That's 6 parts, 6 parts, 6 plant parts that plants and people need.
Full chorus

(Chorue) Turn on the light, turn on the light, turn on the light , turn on the light

The light of the sun, solar powered light of the sun.

Isn't it obvious every day.

It's shining above us all and it's here to stay.

We know the sky is the limit.

We know the power in it.

It's time to begin it.

We're turning on the light.

The Light of the sun, The kight of the sun, solar powered light.

(Chorus)

Don't have to take a drill and hurt a tree

And it will never spill,.

It's always clean and free.

We know the sun is the ticket

Hop on, let's go, let's get it.

(Chorus) The light of the sun     ooo

Solar powered light of the sun

 Solar powered light.

The Future will be so bright.

We've just got to change our minds and

Let the lovelight shine.       oooooooo

We know the sky is the limit

With all the power in it.

   There’s Gonna Be A Rainbow

There’s gonna be a rainbow shining in the sky.

Gonna be a rainbow, we can catch it if we try.

Gonna be a rainbow following the storm.

Gonna be a rainbow with sun to keep us warm.

Rain falls into our hands,

Sun shines down on the land.

With rain, sun, and love all life will grow.

And the earth holds us in her arms in a rainbow

Wanna be a rainbow, shining in the sky?

Wanna be a rainbow, floating way up high?

Wanna be a rainbow, following the storm,

Wanna be a rainbow, with colors being born?

You've Gotta Get Out

(Chorus) You've gotta get out, look up and see the sky,

Climb a tree, see how the birds fly,

Get down, see what's upon the ground.

Get out and meet your world!

Reading book is wonderful. There's so much you can learn,

About kings and stars and dinasaurs and why the season's turn,

But when your mind grows weary from the paper you have turned,

Just put those books up for a little while.

(Chorus)

Telivision and VCR's can teach and entertain.

You laugh, you sry, you learn some things.

You get to watch the game.

But TV can be dangerous if it takes up too much time.

So turn it off before it steals your mind.

(Chorus twice)

The earth has many stories that she wants us all to hear.

They're in the misic of a cricket and the footsteps of a deer.

They're in a world that is just waiting and is right outside your door.

(Chorus)

 Three Little Fishes

1. Down in the meadow in a little bitty pool
Swam three little fishes and a mamma fishy too
Swim said the mamma fishy, swim if you can.
And they swam and they swam right over the dam.

Chorus:
Boop boop diddem doddem waddem  choo !         (repeat 3 times)
And they swam and they swam right over the dam.

2. Stop! Cried the mamma fishy or you’ll get lost.
The three little fishes didn’t want to be bossed.
The three little fishes went off on a spree
And they swam and they swam right out to the sea!
Chorus

3. Whee said the little fishes. Gee what fun!
We’ll swim in the sea till the day is done.
They swam and they swam and it was a lark,
Till all of a sudden . . . they saw a shark!
Help cried the little fishes . . . Look at all those whales,
And quick as they could they turned on their tales.
And back to the pool in the meadow they swam,
And they swam and they swam back over the dam!
Chorus
